Abstract in English:
Pasteurella species are well-known opportunistic bacteria that inhabit the microbiota of the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract of cats and have been related to a set of pet-associated diseases in addition to humans. Most studies involving feline pasteurellosis have been described as case reports and species identification based on classic phenotypic methods. In turn, a lack of comprehensive studies involving a great number of cats with pasteurellosis has been described, especially where diagnosis at the species level has been performed by molecular-based methods. In this scenario, we investigated the molecular identification of Pasteurella species isolated from 26 diseased domestic cats (i.e., cutaneous abscesses, pneumonia, conjunctivitis, open wounds, urinary tract infections, pleural effusion, pyometra, and infection secondary to neoplasia) based on proteomic diagnosis, using mass spectrometry (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry – MALDI-TOF MS). The in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolates and selected epidemiological data (with emphasis on the outcome) were assessed as well. MALDI-TOF MS identified predominantly P. multocida (23/26=88.5%), followed by P. dagmatis (2/26=7.7%) and P. canis (1/26=3.8%). The isolates revealed 100% susceptibility to beta-lactams (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ampicillin, cephalexin, ceftriaxone), tetracyclines (tetracycline, doxycycline) and fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, marbofloxacin) groups of antimicrobials. Conversely, the highest resistance of the isolates was observed for amikacin (10/26=38%). Data on outcomes were available for 61% (16/26) of cats, of which 50% (8/16) died or were subjected to euthanasia due to severe complications (e.g., sepsis, pneumonia, and pleural effusion) secondary to disseminated/systemic infections, although no significant association was observed between Pasteurella species and the clinical-epidemiological findings studied. Our results contribute to the molecular identification of Pasteurella species and vigilance of multidrug-resistant bacteria that infect cats. Also, it highlights the need for the early diagnosis and therapy of feline pasteurellosis due to high mortality rates.

Mammary neoplasms are common in domestic felines but are rarely reported in wild felids. On the other hand, understanding the diseases that affect these animals is crucial, considering the importance of wild felines for the environmental balance. Therefore, we aim to describe a case of mammary neoplasia in an ocelot (Leopardus pardalis). A 12-year-old female ocelot housed in a breeding facility located in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, presented anorexia and dehydration for 48 hours, followed by death. The necropsy revealed a firm mass in the abdominal region and a single irregular, ulcerated mass between the caudal abdominal and inguinal mammary glands. All lesions were located on the right side. The masses were multilobulated, irregular, soft, and white on sectioning, with friable and dark (necrotic) areas. Histopathological examination revealed multiple multilobulated, partially encapsulated, non-delimited masses without free borders, composed of ducts, sometimes forming densely solid areas. Metastases were also observed in the lung and the internal muscle of the pelvic limb in the femoral region. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed using anti-cytokeratin and anti-vimentin antibodies. IHC revealed cytokeratin positivity in the mammary gland. Vimentin was negative in the neoplastic cells and positive in the adjacent connective tissue. Thus, histopathological examination led to what seems to be the first diagnosis of metastatic simple tubular mammary carcinoma in an ocelot.

Abstract in English:
Bovine mastitis is the most common infectious disease in dairy herds and causes important economic losses. Various pathogens can cause the disease, with Staphylococcus aureus being one of the most significant. S. aureus can cause clinical, subclinical, and chronic forms of the disease due to a variety of virulence factors, including protein A, coagulase, toxins, and adhesins. The presence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains complicates treatment protocols and raises concerns about antimicrobial resistance. The genetic characterization of these strains, utilizing techniques such as molecular typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), reveals the existence of different genetic and virulence profiles, as well as the geographical variations in the distribution of these genotypes. The role of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, functional genomics, and multi-omics approaches in the genetic research of bovine mastitis are highlighted, providing a complete understanding of its genetic basis and opening opportunities for targeted interventions and improved disease control strategies in the dairy industry. This review highlights the importance of understanding the genetic diversity and pathogenic mechanisms of S. aureus in bovine mastitis to develop effective disease management strategies and reduce economic losses in the dairy sector globally.

Blood samples were taken from 94 dairy cows based on a past of abortions (4th-7th months) in four different farms in Burdur province. The presence of Chlamydophila abortus (Antibody = Ab), Coxiella burnetti (Ab), Sarcocystis spp. (Ab), Neospora caninum (Ab) and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) (Antigen = Ag) were investigated in the collected blood samples. While seropositivity was determined for C. abortus, C. burnetti and N. caninum in the samples, BVDV was detected positive in the same samples. No samples were detected seropositive for Sarcocystis spp. (Ab). N. caninum showed the highest seropositivity in the samples tested, whereas C. burnetti had the lowest. When we looked at the mixed distribution of the factors in the positive animals, C. abortus + N. caninum was found to be the highest, and C. burnetti + N. caninum was the lowest. As a result of the study, it was determined that N. caninum was the most common abortion factor in cattle that had abortions between 4-7 months, and BVDV, C. abortus and C. burnetti, respectively, could also cause abortion. The high level of N. caninum indicates that canes and underground spring waters around the farms may be important reservoirs.

Abstract in English:
Feline obesity has become an increasingly common problem worldwide over the past decade. Excess weight in cats may predispose them to a range of conditions such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hepatic lipidosis. However, few studies have conducted clinical-laboratory profiles of overweight and obese cats. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe and correlate clinical and laboratory alterations in overweight and obese cats, comparing them with lean cats. Fifty-three cats were evaluated and divided into obese (OB), overweight (SP), and control (CT) groups. After a clinical assessment, the clinically selected cats underwent morphometric measurements and hematological and biochemical tests; their owners were also instructed to complete a questionnaire. Our primary findings included an increase in mean corpuscular volume and total proteins, a decrease in red blood cell count, and an increase in circulating concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and urea in the OB group; the SP group exhibited an increase only in total cholesterol and urea. Furthermore, the OB and SP groups exhibited a higher frequency of ad libitum feeding, were more likely to receive premium food, and generally had lower activity levels. We concluded that being overweight or obese altered the cats’ hematological and biochemical parameters. Moreover, factors related to the feeding and environmental management of cats may predict an increased risk of being overweight.

Rio de Janeiro is a state with a hot and humid climate throughout the year. This characteristic can generate parasitic dynamics that are poorly described in the literature, particularly in pigs, which have low tolerance for high temperatures. This study reports the diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites in pigs in Rio de Janeiro and characterizes the effects of seasons on Balantioides coli. Samples from 21 pigs on an industrial farm were analyzed across seasons. Parasites were detected by qualitative and quantitative microscopic techniques, and B. coli was molecularly characterized in the feces of two pigs. Climatic data were retrieved from the state’s meteorological station. A statistically significant difference in the number of animals positive for parasites between the seasons of the year was detected. In addition, significant differences in the quantification of B. coli and Ascaris suum between seasons were detected, with the highest counts observed in autumn. Through molecular analysis, B. coli infection was confirmed in all fecal samples collected across seasons from two pigs, with type A0 being predominant. Genetic variants of B. coli differed according to season, highlighting the heterogeneous distribution of genetic material in parasitic cells. Overall, the diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasite infection in pigs of reproductive age kept on one property located in the state of Rio de Janeiro was most common in autumn.

A 25-year-old captive female jaguar (Panthera onca) presented with clinical signs of anorexia, adipsia, vomiting, and difficulty moving that progressed over a duration of three days. This eventually led to death. During necropsy, a significant amount of brown fluid was detected in the abdominal cavity. The gallbladder was markedly enlarged, diffusely distended with thickened walls, and had an irregular mucosa ranging from black to white. Bile spilled into the abdominal cavity through a rupture in the wall. Additionally, a focally extensive, 7 x 5 x 3 cm, white mass with adherent friable brown material was observed in the mucosa. A 2 x 2 x 1 cm, firm white nodular mass was present in the extrahepatic bile duct and caused obstruction of the bile passage. Histopathologic evaluation confirmed adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder and adjacent ducts. The neoplasm was arranged as acini and tubules and supported by abundant fibrovascular stroma. Metastases were observed in the liver, intestines, and lungs. Several other tumors were identified in this jaguar. These included papillary carcinomas of the ovaries, fibroleiomyomas in the uterus, leiomyomas in the stomach, and follicular adenomas in the thyroid gland. Chronic kidney disease and moderate dilated cardiomyopathy were also observed. Immunohistochemistry showed positive staining for pan-cytokeratin in the neoplastic cells of the gallbladder, ovary, and thyroid gland. Positive staining for vimentin was observed in the neoplastic cells of the uterus and stomach. The identification of multiple tumors in this aged jaguar highlights the need for routine examinations throughout life for early detection and management of tumors.

Abstract in English:
Echinococcus spp. are zoonotic cestode parasites made up of eight identified species and one genotypic grouping (Echinococcus canadensis), which cause the echinococcosis-hydatidosis complex. The main intermediate hosts are cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and wild animals such as rodents. The aim is to characterize the epidemiological and anatomopathological aspects of the first infection report with the cestode Echinococcus sp. in a prey (Galea spixii) in northeastern Brazil. An adult female Spix’s yellow-toothed cavy (Galea spixii) was preyed upon by a captive-bred bird (Parabuteo unicinctus) during falconry training in a closed forest located in the municipality of Livramento, Paraíba. The rodent was collected from predation, and during inspection, multiple cysts were observed covering organs in the abdominal and thoracic cavities. The rodent’s carcass was sent for necropsy. Macroscopically, it showed multiple traumas due to predation and an abdominal cavity with multiple hydatid cysts covering the omentum, liver, pancreas, thoracic cavity, and lungs. The cysts ranged from 2 to 10 mm in diameter, intact and occasionally collapsed, oval, well-delimited, randomly distributed, filled with translucent hydatid fluid, and visible white to yellowish structures. Organ fragments were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and then routinely processed. Histological sections of the liver, lung, pancreas, and omentum with cysts were selected and submitted to Masson’s trichrome (MT) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) for morphological characterization of the parasite and evaluation of the tissue architecture of the organs in wild rodents. Microscopically, viable and degenerated unilocular and multilocular cysts of varying sizes were observed in the liver, lung, pancreas, and omentum. The cysts were externally surrounded by a moderately thick adventitial layer of fibrous connective tissue and occasional neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages, with parasite components in the center. The morphological characteristics of the parasite were compatible with a cestode belonging to the genus Echinococcus sp. On MT staining, areas of fibrosis were evident around the viable and degenerated cysts in the liver, pancreas, and lung, and the acellular and eosinophilic laminated layer was evident on PAS. Based on the epidemiological and anatomopathological findings associated with the morphological characteristics of the cestode Echinococcus sp., the diagnosis of hydatidosis in Spix’s yellow-toothed cavy was made. G. spixii should be considered intermediate hosts in the infection of Echinococcus sp. for domestic and wild canids and accidentally for humans.

Respiratory obstruction in brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) can lead to secondary gastrointestinal alterations. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the echogenicity of the stomach, duodenum, and jejunum in dogs affected by brachycephalic syndrome. The correlation of these findings with BOAS severity, hematological alterations, and signs of systemic inflammation was investigated. Fifty-two brachycephalic patients and 15 mesocephalic controls, aged between 1 and 8 years, underwent evaluation including hemogram, biochemical analysis, C-reactive protein, and B-mode ultrasonography of the gastrointestinal tract. Brachycephalic animals were categorized based on the severity of BOAS, and owners provided clinical data via questionnaire. In the quantitative analysis, eight regions of interest were defined within the mucosal layer of the stomach, duodenum, and jejunum, and the mean pixel values were quantified for each structure. Leukocyte count (p ≤ 0.001), eosinophils (p = 0.002), monocytes (p < 0.001), creatinine (p ≤ 0.001) and total protein (p ≤ 0.001) were higher in brachycephalic dogs than mesocephalic dogs. Hematological patterns showed mild leukocytosis, possibly indicating subclinical inflammation. Brachycephalic dogs exhibited elevated echogenicity in the duodenum and jejunum, measured in pixels (duodenum: 18.2 ± 11.3; jejunum: 25.6 ± 15.2), which was significantly higher than mesocephalic dogs (p < 0.05; duodenum: 11.04 ± 4.3; jejunum: 9 ± 7), according to variance analysis. Brachycephalic dogs of grades 0, 1, and 2 exhibited higher values than controls and grade 3 dogs. In conclusion, quantitative ultrasonography reduces subjectivity and provides objective insights into gastrointestinal alterations in BOAS-affected dogs.

In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest has been suffering from deforestation, which has had impacts on its flora, fauna, and microbiota. However, the fungal diversity present in these environments is little known and studied. In this study, a total of 90 samples of 45 wild birds (45 feathers and 45 feces) were collected in Ilha da Marambaia, southeastern Brazil. Filamentous fungi isolated from these samples were identified through macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. Some isolates were identified by molecular biology using the PCR technique. Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cunninghamella, Curvularia, Eurotium, Fusarium, Geotrichum, Neosartorya, Pestalotia, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Rhizopus, Mucor and Syncephalastrum were identified. These results indicate the presence of saprophytic fungi species in the feathers and feces of wild birds of the capture site. Further studies should be conducted to elucidate if the mycobiota profile modifies with anthropization and if it interferes with bird health and environmental recovery.
