This study aimed to investigate the circulation of bluetongue virus (BTV) in sheep throughout different regions of the state of Santa Catarina by the serologic agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) assay and to describe the clinical, pathological, and epidemiologic aspects of seven outbreaks and three isolated cases, which occurred between 2009 and 2019. The state was divided into three regions for research into antibodies. The average annual temperatures and altitudes of the regions were described or tabulated. Blood samples were collected from sheep on 24 properties in 16 municipalities distributed throughout the three aforementioned regions. Of the 388 blood samples collected from the sheep, 250 were seropositive (64.4%) in the AGID test. Antibodies against BTV were detected in the three regions. The disease was diagnosed through clinical signs and macroscopic lesions and confirmed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. The affected sheep developed ulcerations in the nostrils, lips, and oral mucosa with crusting, locomotor difficulties, black diarrhea, coughing, and regurgitation, followed by death. The necropsy showed multiple ulcers in the palate and rumen, petechial hemorrhages in the serosa of the esophagus near the esophageal hiatus, and focal hemorrhages in the pulmonary artery. In Santa Catarina, bluetongue in sheep is a seasonal disease that occurs mainly during the hot, rainy seasons (December to April). Seasonality coincides with the time of year when Culicoides vectors have the highest population and metabolic activity.

Este estudo teve como objetivos investigar, por meio do teste sorológico de imunodifusão em gel de ágar (IDGA), a circulação do vírus da língua azul (BTV) em ovinos em diferentes regiões do estado de Santa Catarina e, descrever os aspectos clínico-patológicos e epidemiológicos de sete surtos e três casos isolados, ocorridos entre os anos de 2009 a 2019. Para a pesquisa de anticorpos, o estado foi dividido em três regiões. As temperaturas médias anuais e altitudes das regiões foram descritas ou tabuladas. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue de ovinos em 24 propriedades de 16 municípios distribuídos nas três regiões estabelecidas. Dos 388 ovinos coletados, 250 foram soropositivos (64,4%) no teste de IDGA. Anticorpos contra o BTV foram detectados nas três regiões. A enfermidade foi diagnosticada pelos sinais clínicos, lesões macroscópicas e confirmada pela técnica de reação em cadeia da polimerase com transcrição reversa (RT-PCR). Os ovinos afetados desenvolveram ulcerações nas narinas, lábios e mucosa oral com formação de crostas, dificuldade de locomoção, diarreia enegrecida, tosse e regurgitamento seguido de morte. Na necropsia foi observado principalmente múltiplas úlceras no palato e rúmen, hemorragias petequiais na serosa do esôfago próximo ao hiato esofágico e hemorragia focal na artéria pulmonar. Em Santa Catarina, a língua azul em ovinos é uma doença sazonal, que ocorre principalmente em épocas quentes e chuvosas (dezembro a abril). A sazonalidade coincide com a época do ano a qual os vetores Culicoides apresentam maior população e atividade metabólica.

Botulism is a neuromuscular disorder caused by neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. Equine botulism has been frequently reported worldwide; however, descriptions of cases in South America remain uncommon. This report describes a botulism outbreak in horses due to the ingestion of big bale silage at a stud farm in Brazil. Eight horses consuming silage hay provided in large round bales in the pasture presented progressive muscular weakness, decreased tongue and tail tone, dysphagia, fasciculations, and difficulty raising their head. Five horses died on the farm, and three were referred to a veterinary hospital. Two of the hospitalized horses were discharged, while the third died, and post mortem samples were collected for the detection of C. botulinum toxins. Analysis of a cecum liquid sample confirmed the presence of both botulinum toxins, BoNT/A and BoNT/D, via the bioassay method. Given the nonspecific nature of initial clinical signs, laboratory confirmation becomes imperative, facilitating the implementation of preventive measures. Notably, confirmed diagnoses of botulism are relatively uncommon in horses in Brazil.

O botulismo é um distúrbio neuromuscular causado por neurotoxinas produzidas pelo Clostridium botulinum. O botulismo em equinos tem sido frequentemente relatado em todo o mundo, no entanto descrições de casos na América do Sul permanecem escassas. Este relato descreve um surto de botulismo em cavalos devido à ingestão de silagem em fardos grandes em um haras no Brasil. Oito cavalos, após consumirem feno ensilado fornecido em fardos redondos grandes, apresentaram fraqueza muscular progressiva, diminuição do tônus da língua e da cauda, disfagia, fasciculações e dificuldade para manter o pescoço levantado. Cinco cavalos morreram na propriedade, e três foram encaminhados a um hospital veterinário. Dois dos cavalos hospitalizados receberam alta, enquanto o terceiro morreu, sendo coletadas amostras post mortem para a detecção de toxinas de C. botulinum. A análise de uma amostra de líquido do ceco confirmou a presença das toxinas botulínicas BoNT/A e BoNT/D utilizando o método de bioensaio. Dada a natureza inespecífica dos sinais clínicos iniciais, a confirmação laboratorial torna-se imprescindível, facilitando a implementação de medidas preventivas. Vale destacar que diagnósticos confirmados de botulismo são relativamente incomuns em equinos no Brasil.

Gram-negative bacteria present significant challenges due to their antimicrobial resistance. Members of the Enterobacterales order, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis, pose the greatest risk to public health because of their numerous mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of crude ethanolic extracts (CEE) of Hymenaea martiana Hayne (jatobá), Commiphora leptophloeos (Mart.) Gillett (imburana), Ocimum campechianum Mill. (alfalvaca) and Morus nigra L. (amora miura), as well as the hexane and ethyl acetate fractions of the last one, against clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis obtained from domestic animals. Furthermore, three commercially available compounds – gallic acid (GA), p-Coumaric acid (p-CA), benzoic acid (BA) – and one conducting polymer (synthesized for the test), polypyrrole (Ppy), were also evaluated for their antimicrobial potential against these isolates. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extracts and compounds were determined. All E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates were resistant to the tested extracts. The crude ethanolic extracts showed inhibitory activity against P. mirabilis isolates at concentrations of 3,125 µg/mL for H. martiana and 12,500 µg/mL for O. campechianum. However, C. leptophloeos, M. nigra, and their fractions (hexane and ethyl acetate), as well as GA, did not exhibit bactericidal activity against any of the pathogens. Benzoic acid demonstrated both inhibitory and bactericidal activity against all isolates, with pronounced bactericidal activity against two K. pneumoniae isolates (MBC of 2,000 µg/mL). p-Coumaric acid showed inhibitory activity against all isolates and bactericidal activity (MBC of 5,000 µg/mL) against 66.66% (4/6) of the isolates, proving effective against E. coli and K. pneumoniae. Polypyrrole exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity, inhibiting 100% of the isolates and showing bactericidal activity against 83.33% (5/6) of the clinical isolates tested. These results suggest that the tested extracts and compounds, particularly polypyrrole, may offer a viable alternative against multidrug-resistant microorganisms.

Respiratory obstruction in brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) can lead to secondary gastrointestinal alterations. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the echogenicity of the stomach, duodenum, and jejunum in dogs affected by brachycephalic syndrome. The correlation of these findings with BOAS severity, hematological alterations, and signs of systemic inflammation was investigated. Fifty-two brachycephalic patients and 15 mesocephalic controls, aged between 1 and 8 years, underwent evaluation including hemogram, biochemical analysis, C-reactive protein, and B-mode ultrasonography of the gastrointestinal tract. Brachycephalic animals were categorized based on the severity of BOAS, and owners provided clinical data via questionnaire. In the quantitative analysis, eight regions of interest were defined within the mucosal layer of the stomach, duodenum, and jejunum, and the mean pixel values were quantified for each structure. Leukocyte count (p ≤ 0.001), eosinophils (p = 0.002), monocytes (p < 0.001), creatinine (p ≤ 0.001) and total protein (p ≤ 0.001) were higher in brachycephalic dogs than mesocephalic dogs. Hematological patterns showed mild leukocytosis, possibly indicating subclinical inflammation. Brachycephalic dogs exhibited elevated echogenicity in the duodenum and jejunum, measured in pixels (duodenum: 18.2 ± 11.3; jejunum: 25.6 ± 15.2), which was significantly higher than mesocephalic dogs (p < 0.05; duodenum: 11.04 ± 4.3; jejunum: 9 ± 7), according to variance analysis. Brachycephalic dogs of grades 0, 1, and 2 exhibited higher values than controls and grade 3 dogs. In conclusion, quantitative ultrasonography reduces subjectivity and provides objective insights into gastrointestinal alterations in BOAS-affected dogs.

A obstrução respiratória na síndrome obstrutiva das vias aéreas braquicefálicas (BOAS) pode levar a alterações gastrointestinais secundárias. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar quantitativamente a ecogenicidade do estômago, duodeno e jejuno em cães afetados pela síndrome braquicefálica. A correlação desses achados com a gravidade da BOAS, alterações hematológicas e sinais de inflamação sistêmica foi investigada. Cinquenta e dois pacientes braquicefálicos e 15 controles mesocefálicos, com idades entre um e oito anos, foram submetidos a avaliações incluindo hemograma, análise bioquímica, proteína C-reativa e ultrassonografia modo B do trato gastrointestinal. Os animais braquicefálicos foram categorizados com base na gravidade da BOAS, e os proprietários forneceram dados clínicos por meio de questionário. Na análise quantitativa, oito regiões de interesse foram definidas dentro da camada mucosa do estômago, duodeno e jejuno, e os valores médios de pixel foram quantificados para cada estrutura. Contagem de leucócitos (p ≤ 0,001), eosinófilos (p = 0,002), monócitos (p < 0,001), creatinina (p ≤ 0,001) e proteína total (p ≤ 0,001) foi maior em cães braquicefálicos do que em cães mesocefálicos. Padrões hematológicos mostraram leucocitose leve, possivelmente indicando inflamação subclínica. Cães braquicefálicos exibiram ecogenicidade elevada no duodeno e jejuno, medida em pixels (duodeno: 18,2 ± 11,3; jejuno: 25,6 ± 15,2), que foi significativamente maior do que cães mesocefálicos (p < 0,05; duodeno: 11,04 ± 4,3; jejuno: 9 ± 7), de acordo com análise de variância. In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest has been suffering from deforestation, which has had impacts on its flora, fauna, and microbiota. However, the fungal diversity present in these environments is little known and studied. In this study, a total of 90 samples of 45 wild birds (45 feathers and 45 feces) were collected in Ilha da Marambaia, southeastern Brazil. Filamentous fungi isolated from these samples were identified through macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. Some isolates were identified by molecular biology using the PCR technique. Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cunninghamella, Curvularia, Eurotium, Fusarium, Geotrichum, Neosartorya, Pestalotia, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Rhizopus, Mucor and Syncephalastrum were identified. These results indicate the presence of saprophytic fungi species in the feathers and feces of wild birds of the capture site. Further studies should be conducted to elucidate if the mycobiota profile modifies with anthropization and if it interferes with bird health and environmental recovery.

No Brasil, a Mata Atlântica vem sofrendo com o desmatamento, que tem impactado sua flora, fauna e microbiota. No entanto, a diversidade fúngica presente nesses ambientes é pouco conhecida e estudada. Neste trabalho, um total de 90 amostras de 45 aves silvestres (45 penas e 45 fezes) foram coletadas na Ilha da Marambaia, Sudeste do Brasil. Fungos filamentosos isolados dessas amostras foram identificados por meio de características macroscópicas e microscópicas. Alguns isolados foram identificados por biologia molecular usando a técnica de PCR. Foram identificados Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cunninghamella, Curvularia, Eurotium, Fusarium, Geotrichum, Neosartorya, Pestalotia, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Rhizopus, Mucor e Syncephalastrum. Esses resultados indicam a presença de espécies de fungos saprofíticos nas penas e fezes de aves silvestres do local de captura. Novos estudos devem ser realizados a fim de elucidar se o perfil da micobiota se modifica com a antropização e se interfere na saúde das aves e na recuperação ambiental.

Enterococcal spondylitis affects poultry and causes progressive lameness. This study reports what seems to be the first case of vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Enterococcus in broiler chickens in southern Brazil. We also conducted an experimental infection to evaluate microorganismal characteristics and pathogenicity in broiler chickens. We performed bacterial isolation, identification, and histopathology. The isolates were tested for their growth and survival capacity at different temperatures, pH values, and antimicrobial resistance profiles. The experiment infection was conducted with broiler breeders (n=9). Group 1 = negative control, Group 2 = challenged orally, Group 3 = challenged via air sac. The autopsy was performed on the 50th day of life (DOL). The report showed spondylitis and fusion of thoracic vertebra, accompanied by spinal cord compression, and femoral head necrosis. We used the isolates (n=17) to test their growth at 10°C and 45°C, survival capacity for up to 60° for 30 min, and growth under pH levels from four to 12. Higher resistance was observed against macrolides and quinolones. On experimental infections, all animals expressed signs of lameness and “sitting on the hocks”. Enterococcus faecalis is the causal agent of enterococcal spondylitis in broilers in southern Brazil, which is an underreported and emerging pathological condition that requires attention.

A espondilite enterocócica afeta aves e causa claudicação progressiva. Este estudo relata o primeiro caso de osteomielite vertebral causada por Enterococcus em frangos de corte no sul do Brasil. Também conduzimos uma infecção experimental para avaliar as características microbianas e a patogenicidade em frangos de corte. Realizamos isolamento bacteriano, identificação e histopatologia. Os isolados foram testados quanto ao seu crescimento e capacidade de sobrevivência em diferentes temperaturas, valores de pH e perfil de resistência antimicrobiana. O experimento de infecção foi conduzido com matrizes de corte (n=9). Grupo 1 = controle negativo, Grupo 2 = provocado oralmente, Grupo 3 = provocado via saco aéreo. A autópsia foi realizada no 50º dia de vida (DOL). O laudo mostrou espondilite e fusão de vértebra torácica, acompanhada de compressão da medula espinhal e necrose da cabeça do fêmur. Usamos os isolados (n=17) para testar seu crescimento a 10°C e 45°C, capacidade de sobrevivência até 60° por 30 min e crescimento em níveis de pH de quatro a 12. A maior resistência foi observada contra macrolídeos e quinolonas. Na infecção experimental, todos os animais manifestaram sinais de claudicação e postura sentada sobre os jarretes. Enterococcus faecalis é o agente causal da espondilite enterocócica em frangos de corte no sul do Brasil, que é uma condição patológica emergente e subnotificada que requer atenção.

Male reproductive tract disorders (MRTDs) are common in equids and may represent a significant proportion of the caseload of equine practitioners. Herein, we determined the frequency, clinico-pathological findings, and therapeutics of MRTDs in equids from a 9-year survey of the clinical records of a Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Midwestern Brazil. During this period, 87 affected equids presented 100 MRTDs distributed in 17 different diagnoses. Forty-three (49.4%) equids presented MRTDs affecting the glans penis or preputial skin fold. Testicles, scrotum, and spermatic cords disorders were diagnosed in 32 (36.8%) horses. Of the remaining 12 (13.8%) horses, six presented two different MRTDs on two distinct anatomical areas, and five animals exhibited the same disease, affecting two different anatomical locations. Only one horse presented three distinct MRTDs on two anatomical regions. Habronemiasis was the most frequent MRTD detected in 26% of the diagnoses, followed by miscellaneous wounds (14%), cryptorchidism (13%), inguinal hernia (13%), funiculitis (9%), paraphimosis (6%), squamous cell carcinoma (5%), urethrolithiasis (3%), preputial abscesses, and orchitis (2% each). Phimosis, ulcerative posthitis, epididymitis, hydrocele, papillomatosis, teratoma, and testicular torsion accounted for 1% each. Sixty-three (72.5%) equids received hospital discharge, 18 (20.6%) were humanely euthanized, and six (6.9%) died. This study detected the most relevant MRTDs that affected over 7.5% in a survey of 1,154 equids referred for hospital care. Our finding highlights that MRTDs may be debilitating and life-threatening conditions, and they can potentially impact the reproduction of equids in the region. This knowledge may support equine practitioners in elaborating proper sanitary and management protocols to prevent and reduce the incidence of most MRTDs recorded, improving equid production and welfare.

Distúrbios do trato reprodutivo masculino (DTRMs) são comuns em equídeos e podem representar uma proporção significativa da casuística de hipiatras. Determinamos a frequência, os achados clínico-patológicos e a terapêutica de DTRMs em equídeos a partir de um levantamento de nove anos dos registros clínicos em um Hospital Veterinário no Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Nesse período, 87 equinos afetados apresentaram 100 DTRMs distribuídos em 17 diagnósticos diferentes. Quarenta e três (49,4%) equídeos apresentaram DTRM afetando a glande peniana ou pregas de pele prepucial. Distúrbios dos testículos, escroto e cordão espermático foram diagnosticados em 32 (36,8%) equinos. Dos 12 (13,8%) equinos restantes, seis apresentaram dois DTRMs diferentes em duas áreas anatômicas distintas, e cinco animais exibiram a mesma doença em duas localizações anatômicas diferentes. Apenas um cavalo apresentou três DTRMs distintas em duas regiões anatômicas. A habronemíase foi a DTRM mais frequente detectada em 26% dos diagnósticos, seguida por feridas diversas (14%), criptorquidismo (13%), hérnia inguinal (13%), funiculite (9%), parafimose (6%), carcinoma de células escamosas (5%), uretrolitíase (3%), abscessos prepuciais e orquite (2% cada). Fimose, postite ulcerativa, epididimite, hidrocele, papilomatose, teratoma e torção testicular representaram 1% cada. Sessenta e três (72,5%) equídeos receberam alta hospitalar, 18 (20,6%) foram sacrificados humanitariamente e seis (6,9%) morreram. Este estudo detectou as DTRMs mais relevantes que afetaram 7,5% dos pacientes em um levantamento de 1.154 equídeos encaminhados para atendimento hospitalar. Este achado destaca que as DTRMs podem ser condições debilitantes e com risco de morte, e podem impactar potencialmente a reprodução de equídeos na região. Este conhecimento pode ajudar os hipiatras a elaborar protocolos sanitários e de manejo adequados para prevenir e reduzir a incidência da maioria das DTRMs registradas, melhorando a produção e o bem-estar dos equídeos.

Lamb diarrhea seriously restricts the development of the sheep industry. Infectious pathogens often cause diarrhea, and E. coli isolates are highly distributed in infectious diarrhea. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of pathogenic E. coli in diarrhea lambs and determine the distribution of virulence genes, antibiotic resistance genes, and antibiotic resistance. One hundred seventy-eight E. coli isolates were isolated from the feces of 204 diarrhea lambs. The virulence genes mdh, hlyF, iss, ompA, fimC, iucD, st, lt, stx1, stx2, and antibiotic resistance genes including tetA, tetB, aac (6′)-II, blaCMY-2, qnr, aadA1, sul1, blaTEM, blaCTX-M were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Antibiotic resistance was determined by Kirby-Bauer Disc Diffusion method. There were 109 (61.24%, 109/178) enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), 119 (66.85%, 119/178) Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), and 95 (53.37%, 95/178) hybrid STEC/ETEC isolates. The highest prevalent virulence genes were ompA (80.90%, 144/178) and fimC (67.98%, 121/178), and the lowest was iucD (8.99%, 16/178). The most commonly detected antibiotic resistance genes were tetA/tetB (92.70%, 165/178), qnr (75.84%, 135/178), and sul1 (62.92%, 112/178), no blaTEM or blaCTX-M genes were detected. All isolates had high antibiotic resistance to lincomycin (96.63%, 172/178), tetracycline (88.76%, 158/178), and co-trimoxazole (80.34%, 143/178), and the multidrug resistant (MDR) rate reached 93.82% (167/178). The high prevalence of ETEC and STEC indicates that E. coli is one of the critical pathogenic agents leading to diarrhea in lambs in the region, and its high antibiotic resistance, especially MDR, should be brought to our attention.

The most commonly detected antibiotic resistance genes were tetA/tetB (92.70%, 165/178), qnr (75.84%, 135/178), and sul1 (62.92%, 112/178), no blaTEM or blaCTX-M genes were detected. All isolates had high antibiotic resistance to lincomycin (96.63%, 172/178), tetracycline (88.76%, 158/178), and co-trimoxazole (80.34%, 143/178), and the multidrug resistant (MDR) rate reached 93.82% (167/178). The high prevalence of ETEC and STEC indicates that E. coli is one of the critical pathogenic agents leading to diarrhea in lambs in the region, and its high antibiotic resistance, especially MDR, should be brought to our attention.

Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by defects in insulin secretion and combined peripheral resistance to the hormone. Several non-human primates (NHP) species develop T2DM, mainly captive animals with reduced physical activity and incorrect feeding. This case report describes the T2DM treatment of a black-eared marmoset (Callithrix penicillata) by diet reformulation and metformin oral administration. An adult female was diagnosed with T2DM after hyperglycemia and high serum fructosamine associated with glycosuria and obesity. Metformin hydrochloride (125mg/animal, orally, q24h) associated with feeding intervention was started. After 26 days, a significant reduction in weight, glycemia, and serum fructosamine could be observed, showing satisfactory results for the adopted therapy. Metformin is considered a safe drug for T2DM treatment due to its low hypoglycemia risk. The new diet consisted of sweet potato, squash, and varied fruits offered twice daily. In addition, thawed-mice newborns, egg whites, and small portions of pelleted primate food. In the present report, metformin use, associated with a low glycemic index diet, was effective in treating this particular marmoset and may present a potential for T2DM treatment in other NHPs.

Diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) caracteriza-se por uma combinação de defeitos na secreção de insulina e resistência periférica ao hormônio. Diversas espécies de primatas não humanos (PNH) desenvolvem DM2, sobretudo animais cativos com atividade física reduzida e alimentados incorretamente. Este trabalho descreve o tratamento de DM2 em sagui-de-tufo-preto (Callithrix penicillata), através da reformulação da dieta e administração oral de metformina. Uma fêmea adulta foi diagnosticada com DM2 após apresentar hiperglicemia e frutosaminemia elevadas associadas à glicosúria e à obesidade. Iniciou-se o uso do cloridrato de metformina (125mg/animal, VO, SID) associado ao controle de consumo alimentar com ajustes da dieta. Após 26 dias pode-se observar redução significativa de peso, adequação da glicemia e frutosaminemia, constatando resultado satisfatório da terapêutica adotada. A metformina é considerada um medicamento seguro para o tratamento de DM2, devido ao baixo risco de hipoglicemia. A base da nova dieta era batata-doce, abóbora e frutas variadas oferecidas duas vezes ao dia. Além disso, camundongos recém-nascidos descongelados, clara de ovo e pequenas porções de ração primata peletizada. No presente relato, a metformina associada a uma dieta com baixo índice glicêmico, foi eficaz para tratamento de DM2 podendo apresentar potencial terapêutico de DM2 em outros PNH.

The current study characterizes the genetic distribution of virulence and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus lutetiensis and Streptococcus equinus isolated from cows with clinical mastitis using whole genome sequencing (WGS). Although they are not the protagonist species within the genus Streptococcus, recent studies have isolated these species associated with bovine mastitis. In addition, these species are reported and isolated from humans and other animals. A total of four strains of S. lutetiensis and one of S. equinus were isolated from five cows with identified cases of clinical mastitis at a dairy farm near Ithaca, New York. Nineteen genes associated with antimicrobial resistance and 20 genes associated with virulence were identified in the analyzed strains. All strains presented genes associated with resistance: alr, ddl, gdpD, kasA, murA, lsa(E), msr(D), mef(A), gidB, and LiaF. Resistance genes associated with several different classes of antibiotics have also been reported. Sixteen virulence-associated genes were identified in all strains. Based on our findings, we conclude that the studied species have the potential to cause mastitis in cattle, and further studies are important to elucidate their role.

O presente estudo caracteriza a distribuição genética de virulência e resistência antimicrobiana de Streptococcus lutetiensis e Streptococcus equinus isolados de vacas com mastite clínica usando sequenciamento completo do genoma. Apesar de não serem as espécies protagonistas dentro do gênero Streptococcus, estudos recentes têm isolado essas espécies associadas à mastite bovina. Além disso, essas espécies são relatadas e isoladas de humanos e outros animais. Um total de quatro cepas de S. lutetiensis e uma de S. equinus foram isoladas de cinco vacas com casos identificados de mastite clínica em uma fazenda leiteira perto de Ithaca, Nova York. Dezenove genes associados à resistência antimicrobiana e 20 genes associados à virulência foram identificados nas cepas analisadas. Todas as linhagens apresentaram genes associados à resistência: alr, ddl, gdpD, kasA, murA, lsa(E), msr(D), mef(A), gidB e LiaF. Genes de resistência associados a várias classes diferentes de antibióticos também foram relatados. Dezesseis genes associados à virulência foram identificados em todas as cepas. Com base em nossos achados, concluímos que as espécies estudadas têm potencial para causar mastite em bovinos e mais estudos são importantes para elucidar seu papel.
