Spinal cord injury is a common cause of neurological dysfunction in dogs and cats. Lesions in these species are due to various types of accident, which can cause sequelae that impair the patient for life as a pet, or cause life-threatening injury. The main purpose of this work was the accompaniment of animals with spinal cord trauma seen from August 2009 to November 2010 at the Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Estadual de Londrina, studying the epidemiology and etiology, risk factors, spinal cord segments most affected, outcome of conservative or surgical treatment, ratio of time of patient care with recovery, efficacy and side effects of neuroprotective drugs, complications, sequels and evolution of patients. During this period we monitored 57 animals (48 dogs and nine cats). We observed a predominance of males (68%) and indoors (79%). The main cause of injury was being hit by a car (66%). The time between injury and first attendance was less than eight hours in 42% of cases and more than a day in 51%. The spinal segment most affected was the thoracolumbar (52%). Twenty animals were euthanized after the initial attendance due to poor prognosis. The conservative treatment such as rest and/or external immobilization was performed on 29 animals, and a good outcome was seen in 72.4% of this patients: total functional recovery was observed in 17 (58.6%) animals and partial functional recovery was seen in four (13.8%). Four animals did not recover, and four animals died. Surgical treatment was performed in eight patients, and three animals recovered, one patient did not recover and four animals died or were subjected to euthanasia due to complications during intraoperative or postoperative period. Conservative treatment was a viable therapy, mainly in dogs with cervical spinal cord trauma.

Studies on the nature and cause of skin lesions in horses on a farm in the county of Castanhal, northeastern Para, Brazil were conducted. These were visits to the farm, epidemiological studies, blood sample collections, skin biopsies, and inspection of the pasture. The study included 25 Equidae, 14 males and 11 females, six months to eight years old. The animals showed ulcerative lesions of irregular borders on the head (nose, muzzle, upper and lower lips), in the oral cavity (buccal vestibule and gum) and on the limbs (billets, metacarpals and metatarsals and scapular-humeral joint). The histopathological examination revealed foci of cutaneous erosions with epidermal necrosis, spongiosis and vesicular degeneration of the remaining epidermis, and mild inflammatory infiltrate in the underlying dermis, consisting predominantly of macrophages and, to a lesser degree, eosinophils. The inspection of the pasture, which consisted of Brachiaria humidicola, revealed a heavy invasion by two plants provided with spines, Mimosa pudica and Mimosa debilis, of the Leguminosae Mimosoideae family. It was concluded that the skin lesions were caused by traumatic action of the spines of Mimosa pudica and Mimosa debilis.

Many plants cause mechanical injury in horses and ruminants, as those that cause traumatism on skin and mucosa, and those that cause lesions in the digestive system, including esophagus obstruction, rumen overload, and intestinal obstruction. In this paper, plants causing mechanical injury to ruminants and horses in Brazil are reviewed, and an outbreak in sheep of mechanical injury of the skin by Stipa sp. in Uruguay is reported. The sheep, mainly lambs, showed large number of fruits of Stipa sp. in the wool, some of them penetrating the skin, panniculus adiposus, and cutaneous trunci muscle, causing multifocal dermatitis and panniculitis.

A condition of cattle and sheep characterized by ulcerous and granulomatous skin lesions of the legs was studied. Epidemiological data and the nature of the lesions indicate that they are caused by the thorns of Mimosa pudica (Leg. Mimosoideae). The disease was observed only in pastures largely infested by the plant, and animals recover quickly when moved from them.

A condition with enlargement of the oral cleft in horses was studied. The enlargement of varied extension was uni or bilateral. The cheek mucosa of the labial commissure showed slight erosions. During chewing there was loss of small amounts of grass and saliva through the oral cleft. The affected horses were in good nutritional condition. Histopathological studies of tissues obtained by biopsia, revealed a superficial epidermitis. The pastures consisted of Panicum maximum grass (varieties Tanzânia, Mombaça, Tobiatã and Colonião) which was mature, tall, lignified, with leaves of cutting edges. Based on epidemiological, clinical and histopathological data, it was concluded that the lesions were caused by the hard grass, favored by the way horses pull the tall grass and chew it.
