#41 - Isosporoid Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) parasites of Tanagers (Passeriformes: Thraupidae) from the Marambaia Island, Brazil, 31(9):798-805

E-mail: bertobp@ufrrj.br In recent years some coccidian parasites of birds were recorded in Marambaia Island, which is a protected environment with a great biodiversity of birds, mainly tanagers. In this current study Isospora tiesangui, I. sepetibensis, I. ramphoceli, I. navarroi, I. cadimi and I. marambaiensis were identified according to their respective thraupid hosts of the Marambaia Island. These species were characterized with histograms, linear regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The main feature of identification was the morphology of the sporocyst, mainly Stieda and substieda bodies, since the morphometry did not provide sufficient differentiation. Besides, Dacnis cayana and Thraupis palmarum were reported as new hosts to I. sepetibensis and I. navarroi respectively.

E-mail: bertobp@ufrrj.br Nos últimos anos, alguns coccídios de aves foram registrados na Ilha da Marambaia, que é um ambiente protegido com uma grande biodiversidade de aves, principalmente traupídeos. No presente estudo Isospora tiesangui, I. sepetibensis, I. ramphoceli, I. navarroi, I. cadimi e I. marambaiensis foram identificadas de acordo com suas respectivos hospedeiros da Ilha da Marambaia, RJ. Essas espécies foram caracterizadas com histogramas, regressão linear e análise de variância (ANOVA). A principal característica de identificação foi a morfologia do esporocisto, principalmente os corpos de stieda e substieda, uma vez que a morfometria não forneceu diferenciação suficiente. Além disso, Dacnis cayana e Thraupis palmarum foram registrados como novos hospedeiros para I. sepetibensis e I. navarroi respectivamente.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 30(11):988-990. E-mail: grita62@hotmail.com The objective of this study was to identify the ectoparasites of wild animals received by the Center of Wild Animals of São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. The ectoparasites identified were: the lice Acidoproctus sp., Trinoton sp., Ciconiphilus sp., Austromenopon sp., Quadraceps sp., Saemundssonia sp., and Trichodectes canis; the ticks Amblyomma rotundatum and Rhipicephalus sanguineus; the fleas Ctenocephalides felis, and larvae of Cochliomyia hominivorax. The data presented register the infestation of wild mammals, reptiles and birds by ectoparasites.

E-mail: grita62@hotmail.com Objetivou-se identificar os ectoparasitos de animais silvestres recepcionados pelo Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres, São Luís, Maranhão. Os ectopararasitos identificados foram: piolhos Acidoproctus sp., Trinoton sp., Ciconiphilus sp, Austromenopon sp., Quadraceps sp., Saemundssonia sp. e Trichodectes canis; carrapato Amblyomma rotundatum e Rhipicephalus sanguineus; pulgas Ctenocephalides felis e larvas de Cochliomyia hominivorax. Os resultados apresentados documentam a infestação de mamíferos, répteis e aves silvestres por ectoparasitos.

E-mail: bianchin@cnpgc.embrapa.br Horn fly (Haematobia irritans) is one of the most important Brazilian cattle ectoparasites. Epidemiological studies are needed due the increasing difficulty of their chemical control. In order to obtain a better knowledge of their seasonal population dynamics, 14 days interval fly counts were made on 7-30 month old beef cattle, from winter 1996 to summer 2002. Horn fly population levels increase (P<0.05) was observed during the seasons of each infestation period (spring until autumn), mainly in spring and summer, and sometimes in autumn, followed by a significant reduction (P<0.05) in winter, when the relative humidity decreases to less than 60%. A straight (P<0.05) and immediate correlation between the relative humidity and the fly count was found, whilst the most evident effects of temperature and rain fall (P<0.05) were associated with counts done 42-56 days after attainment of the climatic data. The highest parasitism load (average number of flies per animal) observed for the genetic groups used were: Aberdeen Angus x Nellore = 173.5 (134-254); ½ Brown Swiss x Nellore = 183.5 (32-540); ¾ Aberdeen Angus x Nellore = 133.0 (18-374), and Valdostana x Nellore = 219.0 (58-620). Torrential rain falls during the initial half of the infestation period (spring until midsummer) are common in this region and were considered the main reason for the low to moderate population levels verified at that time, in comparison with those which occurred during the last half of the infestation period.

A review.] Controle biológico de helmintos parasitos de animais: estágio atual e perspectivas futuras. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 23(3):93-100. Depto Parasitologia, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Cx. Postal 486, Belo Horizonte, MG 31270-901, Brazil.E-mail:mmot@icb.ufmg.br Biological control is a non-chemical alternative method with its main goal to reduce the amount of parasite population using natural antagonists. The administration of nematophagous fungi to animais has been considered an alternative in gastrointestinal helminthiasis prophylaxis. The nematophagous fungi produce trap-shaped structures, which are responsible for capturing and destroying the free-living stages of nematodes. The genera Arthrobotrys, Duddingtonia and Monacrosporium has been shown efficacy in laboratory and field experiments against cattle, equine, ovine and swine parasites. Severa) fungi formulations have been evaluated, but there is so far no commercial product available. The association of research groups with industry could improve the successful implementation of this control method.

A administração de fungos nematófagos aos animais domésticos é considerada uma promissora alternativa na profilaxia das helmintíases gastrintestinais parasitárias. Os fungos nematófagos desenvolvem estruturas em forma de armadilhas, responsáveis pela captura e destruição dos estágios infectantes dos nematóides. Os fungos dos gêneros Arthrobotrys, Duddingtonia e Monacrosporium têm demonstrado eficácia em experimentos laboratoriais e no campo no controle de parasitos de bovinos, eqüinos, ovinos e suínos. Diversas formulações fúngicas têm sido avaliadas, no entanto, ainda não há nenhum produto comercial disponível. A associação dos grupos de pesquisa e o envolvimento das indústrias poderão colaborar para o sucesso na implementação desta forma de controle.
