#661 - Perinatal lamb mortality in three counties in Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract in English:

A study on ovine perinatal mortality was done on one farm near Bagé in 1978 and on 15 farms in the counties of Bagé, Pelotas and Santa Vitória do Palmar, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1979. Six hundred and twelve lambs were necropsied. The most commom cause of death was starvation/exposure which accounted for 58.2% of deaths in 1978 and 56.7% in 1979. Dystocia was the second cause of mortality, 8.6% in 1978 and 22.9% in 1979. Predators were the primary cause of death of 2.4% of necropsied lambs, in 1979. Other causes of death (congenital infections, neonatal infections, congenital malformations) were not considered important in the total number of mortalities. When a comparison was made of birth weights on one farm, it was observed that those lambs that died had weighed significantly less than those that survived (P < 0.01). Lambs which had died from starvation/exposure were significantly lighter than those that died of complications due to dystocia (P < 0.01). Lambing percentages, lamb mortality and survival rate were determined on seven of the farms studied in 1979. Perinatal mortality (21%) was the main cause of the low reproductive performance on only one farm. Although lamb mortality was not great, between· 8 and 13% on the rest of the farms, the low marking percentage, between 66 and 84%, was due to low lambing rates.

#662 - Anomalies in the development of the tubular genital system of slaughtered female buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

Abstract in English:

Genital systems of 612 female water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis Lin.) of undefined breed, obtained from slaughterhouses in the State of Para, were studied. A total of 77 (12.6%) animals showed abnormalities. Results from pregnant and non-pregnant animals were considered separately. In the oviducts of pregnant buffaloes, one case (1.3%) of unilateral segmentary aplasia was identified, while three similar cases (3.9%) were noted in non-pregnant buffaloes, as well as one case (1 .3%) with bilateral involvement. A large percentage (44.2%) of the findings were paraovarian cysts: 26 instances (33.8%) of unilateral paraovarian cysts were identified in the mesosalpinx, 11 (14.3%) corresponding to pregnant and 15 (19.5%) to non-pregnant females; eight bilateral cases (10.4%) were also observed, of which three (3.9%) were found in pregnant and five (6.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. In the uterus, out of a total of 29 (37.6%) anomalies, seven (9.1%) appeared in pregnant and 22 (28.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. A high prevalence (28.6%) of cystic formation on the perimetrium was observed in these animals. Malformations of the cervix were only found in three (3.9%) non-pregnant buffaloes. Two anomalies (2.6%) of the vagina were encountered in non-pregnant animals. Four (5.2%) anomalies were seen in the vestibule, one (1 .3%) in a pregnant animal and three (3.9%) in non-pregnant animals.

#663 - Congenital transmission of the group-specific antigen of avian lymphoid leukosis virus in commercial stocks in Brazil

Abstract in English:

Egg albumens from hens belonging to nine commercial laying stocks and one broiler stock, obtained from five poultry breeders, were tested for the presence of the group-specific (gs) antigen oflymphoid leukosis viroses (LLV). The congenital transmission rates in the laying stocks ranged from 6.7 to 24.7 percent, while the rate in the broiler stock tested was found to be 1.3 percent. The significance of these findings in relation to the eradication of LLV is discussed.
