Abstract in English:
Inclusion body disease (IBD) is a global viral infectious disease that affects snakes, mainly from the Boidae and Pythonidae families. The appearance of secondary infections is common in cases of IBD. The aim of this study was to report a case of inclusion body disease (IBD) associated with secondary infection in the respiratory system by Salmonella spp. in a captive Boa constrictor in the state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. A male captive snake from a private captivity was sent for necropsy after presenting apathy and anorexia. It was sent for necropsy to the “Laboratório de Anatomia e Fisiologia Animal” at the “Universidade Federal do Cariri.” Macroscopically, there was a discrete focal brownish catarrhal content in the tracheal lumen. The lungs, especially the right one, were reddish, with multifocal to coalescing yellowish areas. On the cut surface, these areas extended to the lung parenchyma. They were soft, yellow and had a pasty texture. A brownish catarrhal exudate was also observed in the lung cavity. Microbiological examination of the tracheal swab and lungs resulted in the isolation of Salmonella spp. as well as Achromobacter denitrificans in the trachea. Fragments from all organs were collected, fixed in 10% buffered formalin solution and routinely processed to make histological slides stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE). Microscopically, there was lymphoplasmacytic and heterophilic tracheitis, with hyperplasia of the mucosal epithelium associated with intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies. In the lungs, there was granulomatous pneumonia. The faveolar epithelium showed degeneration and necrosis associated with intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies. In the intestine, there was necrotic enteritis. In the liver there was random necrotic hepatitis. In the kidneys, there was degeneration and necrosis of the tubular epithelium and interstitial nephritis. Round to oval, intracellular eosinophilic to amphophilic inclusion bodies were also seen in the pancreas, liver, bile ducts, kidneys, and brain. Paraffin blocks of lung and intestine fragments were sent to the Veterinary Pathology Department at “Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul” for immunohistochemistry with anti-Salmonella antibody, with positive immunostaining. The findings of inclusion bodies were consistent with infection by a virus of the genus Reptarenavirus. This appears to be the first reported case of IBD in a Boa constrictor from a private zoo in the state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. In the present report, the disease was associated with secondary infection in the respiratory system by Salmonella sp. Additionally, this seems to be the first report of isolation of A. denitrificans from the microbiome of a respiratory sample in a snake in Brazil. Although Salmonella spp. infections are common in snakes, the isolation of A. denitrificans requires further studies on infection routes, pathogenicity and antimicrobial sensitivity.

No pulmão, havia pneumonia granulomatosa. No intestino havia enterite necrótica. No fígado havia hepatite necrótica, aleatória.
Abstract in English:
Fractures are a major problem in opossums found in urban environments, and knowledge of fracture location is of great importance for the success of veterinary care for this marsupial, aiming for successful healing. Due to the proximity of urban centers to forested areas, contact between humans and wildlife, especially marsupials, is increasingly intense. Therefore, wild animals, such as the white-eared opossum, are increasingly treated at veterinary centers. Thus, the objective of this study was to report the case series of fractures of this marsupial species treated and radiographed at the Veterinary Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, São Paulo State University (Unesp), Botucatu Campus, from 2020 to 2024. This analysis showed that of the 93 animals registered during this period, 38 (40.8%) presented fractures, with 44.7% occurring during the spring. The study also shows that the main cause of the fractures was dog attacks, accounting for 15 cases (39.4%). Regarding anatomical location, out of a total of 88 fractures, the most affected bone group was the vertebral column with 15 fractures (17%), followed by the ribs and mandible, each with 14 fractures (16%). Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that during this retrospective study period, the number of fractures in white-eared opossums was higher in the spring due to dog attacks, which resulted in rib fractures. Given this data, further research into mitigation strategies to decrease the risk of fractures should be considered.

Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common heart disease in dogs, causing mitral valve degeneration that can lead to heart failure and, in advanced cases, collapse or sudden death, as well as secondary pulmonary changes such as pulmonary congestion and edema. A prospective, case-control, and observational study was conducted to evaluate the utility of B-mode ultrasonography and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography for assessing the pleuropulmonary interface in dogs with MMVD. Fifteen dogs with MMVD (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – ACVIM stages B1, B2, and C) and fifteen healthy dogs underwent radiographic, echocardiographic, and ultrasonographic examinations, including the VetBLUE protocol. While B-lines were infrequently observed, quantitative ARFI elastography revealed a significant reduction in shear wave velocity (SWV) in the perihilar, medial, and cranial lung regions of the MMVD group, indicating decreased tissue stiffness. Furthermore, pleural thickness was significantly greater in sick animals. A mean SWV cutoff value of < 3.71 m/s demonstrated high sensitivity (80%) and specificity (86.67%) for identifying dogs with MMVD. Elastography detected structural changes at the pleuropulmonary interface associated with MMVD, with ARFI proving a more sensitive, non-invasive tool than B-mode for early detection.

Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) affects Psittaciformes worldwide. In Brazil, PBFD is an emerging disease that has threatened exotic and native Psittaciformes in captivity; however, reports in the country are still scarce. The aim of this study was to describe a natural outbreak of PBFD in rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) from breeding facilities in the state of Ceará, Northeast of Brazil. Six fledgling parakeets presented progressive feather loss and apathy and were euthanized due to a presumptive diagnosis of PBFD. Samples from the organs were collected in 10% formalin. Feathers and fragments of the organs were frozen and later tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using a conserved sequence of the viral genome, followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Grossly, multifocal to coalescent apteria were observed in rectrices and covering feathers. Microscopically, multiple areas showed a disordered increase of epithelial cells in the stratum germinativum of the skin's epithelial layer, as well as epithelial and follicular necrosis with botryoid inclusion bodies. In addition, cellular necrosis was noted in the thymus and bursa. All samples tested positive for beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) and were confirmed by sequence analysis. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of BFDV infection in the State of Ceará. Considering the risk of Psittacula krameri as a potential spreader of BFDV, we emphasize the need to establish control measures to prevent viral dissemination to neotropical psittacine birds

Abstract in English:
Hematological and biochemical analysis of birds of prey serves as a valuable tool to assist in assessing the health status of individual animals when associated with clinical parameters. The scarcity of studies determining reference intervals for the roadside hawk (Rupornis magnirostris) interferes with the correct interpretation of the health status of these animals in captivity. In this study, blood samples were collected from 16 roadside hawks rescued in the state of Ceará to perform hematological analyses and serum biochemical measurements. Of this total, 10 (62.5%) birds were young hawks, and six (37.5%) were adults. All hawks underwent hematological analysis, while 12 of the 16 (75%) underwent biochemical analysis, of which eight (66.6%) were young, and four (33.3%) were adults. The values of the hematological parameters for all animals were as follows: red blood cells = 2.60 x 106/μL (± 0.58), hemoglobin = 10.26 g/dL (± 1.34), hematocrit = 38.94% (± 5.48), mean corpuscular volume = 154.05 fL (± 28.67), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration = 26.43% (± 1.26), leukocytes = 12.31 x 103/μL (± 6.75), heterophils = 5.56 x 103/μL (± 3.91), lymphocytes = 2.68 x 103/μL (± 2.38), eosinophils = 2.62 x 103/μL (± 2.29), basophils = 0.377 x 103/μL (± 0.52), monocytes = 1.06 x 103/μL (± 0.74) and total plasma proteins = 4.56 g/dL (± 0.77). The mean values obtained from serum biochemical measurements were as follows: uric acid = 14.69 mg/dl (± 9.40), aspartate aminotransferase = 218.13 UI/l (± 108.59), creatine kinase = 1,156 UI/l (± 892.71), albumin = 1.06 g/dl (± 0.18), total proteins = 3.57 g/dl (± 1.11), globulin = 2.5 g/dl (± 1.04), albumin/globulin ratio = 0.47 g/dl (± 0.21). The values obtained in this study are similar to those reported in previous studies for the same species. There was no significant difference in the hematological and biochemical parameters of the adult hawks versus the young hawks. Hematology and biochemistry associated with the clinical evaluation and monitoring of hawks are important factors in determining the health status of these birds when considering their suitability for reintroduction into their natural environment.

Abstract in English:
Obesity is considered a chronic inflammatory process that is related to metabolic impairment, respiratory distress, and cardiovascular disease. In cats, few studies have evaluated the implications of obesity on the cardiovascular system, and the existing literature is controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study is to detect pressure, electrocardiographic, and morphofunctional changes in overweight and obese cats. After clinical and laboratory evaluation, 45 animals were selected for the study. Cats were separated according to body condition score (BCS) into three groups (control, overweight, and obese). All animals underwent blood pressure measurement, electrocardiogram, and transthoracic echocardiogram. Results are presented as mean ± standard deviation (SD). Data were considered statistically significant at p<0.05. GraphPad Prism® 7.04 software was used for statistical analyses. Mean arterial pressure in obese cats was higher than in animals with ideal weight (CT 123.60 ± 8.97mmHg vs OB 143.00 ± 22.12mmHg, p<0.0138), but hypertension was not detected. On the electrocardiogram, P wave duration (CT 33.67 ± 1.56ms vs OB 37.76 ± 2.76ms; p<0.0003) and QRS complex (CT 48.14 ± 2.56ms vs OB 54.48 ± 5.51ms; p<0.002) were significantly higher in the obese group. There were no significant echocardiographic changes. There was a direct correlation between blood pressure and BCS (r:0.36, p<0.01). The P wave was positively correlated with the BCS (r:0.56, p<0.0001). Likewise, the QRS complex correlated directly with the BCS (r:0.52, p<0.0003). The results indicate cat obesity can directly affect the cardiovascular system, promoting pressure and electrocardiographic changes. Therefore, monitoring the cardiovascular system of cats with obesity is essential.

Equine piroplasmosis is an apicomplexan hemoprotozoan-caused disease that affects equids worldwide. Horses that survive piroplasmosis can become asymptomatic carriers for the rest of their lives. The present study aimed to determine the frequency of piroplasms and to compare three different blood smear tests (jugular, peripheral, and splenic blood) to detect piroplasms in asymptomatic wandering horses seized by the “Secretaria de Estado da Agricultura, Abastecimento e Desenvolvimento Rural do Distrito Federal” (SEAGRI-DF), Midwest region of Brazil. Of the 100 horses evaluated, 38 were diagnosed positive for piroplasm (38%), with the etiological agents found at the jugular blood smear in 11% (11/100) of horses, peripheral blood smear in 13% (13/100), and splenic blood smear in 38% (38/100). Piroplasm-positive horses showed anemia, neutrophilia, and lymphopenia, but the hematological changes did not differ statistically between positive and negative horses. In summary, the stray horses evaluated showed a high incidence of piroplasm (38%). All positive horses presented one of the etiologic agents in the splenic blood, but some did not show the parasite in the jugular blood smear (27/38, 71%) or the peripheral blood smear (25/38, 65.8%). Thus, the splenic blood was shown to be the best sample to determine the presence of piroplasm in wandering horses. As it is a low-cost and easy-to-perform test, it can be included in the routine diagnosis of equine piroplasmosis, helping to monitor the prevalence of piroplasms in places where molecular techniques are not accessible.

The samples were taken from 106 cows with various-looking lesions on their teats and ranged in age from 2 to 8 years. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antigen (Ag) positive for the bovine papillomavirus (BPV) was found in 59 (55.7%) blood serum samples. PCR using FAP59/64 primers was positive for 24 (22.6%) samples. BPV-2 (40, 37.7%), BPV-6 (28, 26.4%), BPV-8 (30, 28.3%), BPV-9 (36, 34%), BPV-10 (32, 30.3%), and BPV-12 (22, 20.8%) were found in a PCR type-specific analysis of single and mixed type teat warts. The highest positivity was observed in BPV-2, BPV-9 and BPV-10 in flat and round forms, BPV-6, BPV-10, BPV-12, and mixed types in rice grain-cauliflower forms, BPV-9 and mixed types in filiform in the distribution of types based on the macroscopic appearance of teat lesions. As for the distribution of BPV types according to age, the most BPV-2 types were found in the age group of two years, the most BPV-10 types in the age group of three years, the most BPV-9 types in the age group of four years, the most BPV-8+BPV-12 types in the age group of five years, and the most mixed types between the ages of six and eight years. The existence of the virus was then checked using electron microscopy on the chosen samples (at least one investigation was conducted), and it was positively identified using BPV type-specific primers. The authors concluded that BPV detection using an ELISA (Ag) test from blood serum samples was shown to be less sensitive than BPV type-specific PCR from wart samples.
