#371 - Experimental poisoning by the seeds of Abrus precatorius (Leg. Papilionoideae) in rabbits

Abstract in English:

The ground or whole seeds of Abrus precatoríus L., given by stomach tube in single doses to rabbits, caused a clinic-pathological picture of enteritis. The ground seeds caused death of all rabbits which received 0.03125 g/kg or more; doses of 0.015625 g/kg, 0.007812 g/kg and 0.003906 g/kg caused death of always one of three rabbits which received one of the doses. The dose of 0.001953 g/kg caused only slight symptoms in one of three rabbits tested; doses of 0.0009765 g/kg and 0.00048825 g/kg, each given to two rabbits, did not cause any symptoms. The whole seeds caused death of two rabbits which received the doses of 0.75 g/kg and 0.375 g/kg; doses of 0.25 g/kg and 0.125 g/kg, each one given to three rabbits, caused death of two from each group. The dose of 0.625 g/kg given to six rabbits, caused death only of one. The dose of 0.03125 g/kg did not cause any symptoms of poisoning in six rabbits. The period between the administration of the seeds and death varied from 13h35min to 7 days in the experiments with the ground seeds, and from 29hl 4min to 59h40min in the experiments with the whole seeds. The period between the administration of the seeds and recovery varied from 3 and a half days to 17 days in the experiments with the ground seeds and from 2 to 16 days in the experiments with the whole seeds. All 44 rabbits used in these experiments received the seeds only once. The clinic-pathological picture of the poisoning, which was the sarne in the experiments with the ground and the whole seeds of A.precatorius, consisted in inappetence/ anorexia, few faeces with bolus altered in form and size, sometimes dark coloured, soft or liquid, of foetid odor, with mucus and seldom with fibrina. There were manifestations of colic. The most important post-mortem changes were found in the small intestine and cecum. The former was distended by large amounts of liquid and mucous contents. Its wall was congested throughout its length and sometimes edematous, and fibrine covered the mucosa. The cecum was distended by soft to liquid contents and its wall showed congestion/hemorrhages and edema. The wall of the proximal colon was hemorrhagic and mucus was sometimes found in the lumen. In the rabbits which received the whole seeds, some of them were found in the stomach or rectum. In most rabbits slight to moderate splenomegaly was observed. The most important histological changes were seen in the digestive tract, mainly in the small intestine and less pronounced in the cecum. Few or no changes were observed in stomach and colon. The changes found in the different parts of the intestine were similar and consisted in coagulative necrosis of the mucosa with presence of nuclear fragments, congestion/hemorrhages of the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa, as well as edema of the submucosa. Additionally in the small intestine large amounts of nuclear fragments were seen in the upper portion of the lymphoid follicles and in smaller amounts in its center. In the appendix vermiformis, and in many cases also in the rudimentar cecum, variable amounts of nuclear fragments were seen in the stroma of the mucosa which resulted from necrosis by caryorhexis of macrophages of the lymphoid follicles, which migrated towards the intestinal lumen. In most rabbits thers was congestion of the spleen and mesenteric lymphnodes.

Abstract in Portuguese:

Fibrina revestia a mucosa.

#372 - Poisoning by Amaranthus spp. (Amaranthaceae) in pigs in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract in English:

Two outbreaks of Amaranthus spp. poisoning occurring in young pigs in Southern Brazil in late summer and early autumn are described. In both instances large amounts of freshly harvested Amaranthus spp. in its seeding stage were fed to the pigs. In one farm the Amaranthus was identified as A. viridis. Fourteen out of 25 pigs (56%) in one farm and 17 out of 100 07%) in another died. Clinical sigos included anorexia, depression, incoordinated gait; muscle stiffness, lateral recumbency, followed by death which occurred from 4 to 48 hours after clinical sigos were observed. Necropsy findings included perirenal edema and edema of other sites such as ascites; hydrotorax, hydropericardium, of the mesentery and the subcutaneous tissue of the ventral abdominal wall. The kidneys were pale and soft with subcapsular petechiae. In one of the three cases submitted for post-mortem examination there was marked edema of the renal papilla. Main histopathological findings were toxic tubular nephrosis affecting mainly the proximal convoluted tubules and mild tubular regeneration. In one case few refringent crystals were seen in the lumina of proximal tubules and in two cases the degenerative renal lesions were associated with moderate mononuclear interstitial inflitrate. Extra-renal lesions consisting of fibrinonecrotic glossitis and esophagitis were found in one pig and attributed to uremia.

#373 - Experimental poisoning by the seeds of Abrus precatorius (Leg. Papilionoideae) in sheep

Abstract in English:

The oral administration of the whole or finely ground seeds of Abrus precatorius (Leg. Papilionoideae), caused severe gastroenteritis in sheep. The lethal dose was 7.5 and 1.25 g/kg of respectively the whole and finely ground seeds. In the experiments with the whole seeds and lethal outcome, first symptoms were observed between 15 and 30 hours after administration, and the course of the poisoning varied from 35 to 41 hours; the period between administration of the seeds and death varied from 51 to 71 hours. The dose of 5 g/kg caused only slight poisoning and the animals were recovered between 6 and 8 hours after administration of the seeds. In the experiments with the finely ground seeds and lethal outcome first symptoms were observed between 6 and 21 hours after administration, the course of poisoning was from 13 to 14 bours and the period between administration and death varied from 21 to 33 hours. The doses of 0.937, 0.625 and 0.3125 g/kg caused respectively severe, moderate and slight poisoning with recovery respectively in 7, 4, and 3 days after administration of the seeds. The clinical-pathological picture was the sarne wether the animals received the whole or finely ground seeds. The main symptoms were colic and foetid diarrhea, with mucus and fibrine (pseudomembranes). Those animals which had received the larger doses, defecated frequently, in form of a jet of liquid feces. The main post-mortem findings were observed in the digestive tract, from abomasum to rectum; its wall had congestion, hemorrhages and oedema; fibrine covered the mucosa or was present in the intestinal contents, which were liquid in the small intestine and mucous in the large intestine. The mesenteric lymphnodes were swollen. The main histopathological findings concerned the digestive tract, especially the abomasum, but also from duodenum to the rectum, and were necrosis/hemorraghes of the mucosa, congestion and oedema of the submucosa and serosa.

#374 - Ultrastructural alterations of bone cells in the experimental Solanum malacoxylon poisoning in rabbits

Abstract in English:

The ultrastructure of bone cells of mid-diaphysis of the humerus of young rabbits that received by gastric tube a water estract of Solanum malacoxylon corresponding to 100 mg/kg of body weight is described. Atrophic, degenerated and necrotic osteocytes anel mineralization of perilacunar osteoiel were the main lesions. Osteoblasts were atrophic with diminution of synthetic organels. Osteoclasts exhibited a ruffle border in dose contact with the non eroded mineralized matrix, poorly developecl vesicular region and absent clear zone. Macrophages in fusion forming multinucleated giant cells wcre seen in some resorption cavities. It is suggested that the 1,25(OH)2D3 present in the plant is responsible for the cell changes, inhibition of osteoclastic and osteocytic resorption anel osteopetrosis.

#375 - Experiments on the to:xicity of some ornamental plants in cattle

Abstract in English:

Due to inquiries about the toxicity of ornamental plants to farm animals, and the few data available in the literature on this subject, feeding experiments were performed in cattle with the following plants: Allamanda cathartica, Nerium oleander and Tbevetia peruvíana of the Apocinaceae family, Codiaeum sp., Euphorbia cotinifolia, Euphorbia pulcherrima and Euphorbia tirucalli of the Euphorbiaceae family, Datura arborea of the Solanaceae family, Colocasia antiquoruni, Dieffenbachia picta, Monstera deliciosa, Philodendron hastatum, Philodendron selloum ( = P. sellowii) and Scindapsus aureus ( = Epipremnum aureum) of the Araceae family, Rhododendron ledifolium and Rhododendron indicum of the Ericaceae family, and Malvaviscus arboreus of the Malvaceae family. The only plants which caused lethal poisoning were Allamanda cathartica, Neríum oleander, Tbevetia peruviana and Rhododendron indicum. The letal dose for A. catártica was 30 g/kg (causing death of 2 of 3 bovines which received this dose), for N. oleanderit varied from 0,25 to 0,5 g/kg (0,25 killed 1 of 4 and 0,5 the 2 bovines which received this dose); T. peruviana caused death of 3 bovines with doses of 14,4 g/kg or more (out of 7 bovines which received these doses), and R. indicum caused death of the animal which received the highest dose which could be given, this is 29,39 g/kg, whilst a second bovine which received 29 g/kg suffered only severe poisoning. Other plants that caused severe poisoning without lethal outcome were Euphorbia pulcherríma, in doses of 16,4 and 30 g/kg, Rhododendron ledifolium in one bovine which ingested 20 g/kg, the highest dose of this plant administered. Moderate poisoning was caused by Datura arborea in one bovine which ingested 40 g/kg, by Colocasia antiquorum in 2 bovines which ingested 4 and 5,9 g/kg and by Dieffenbachia picta in 2 bovines, which ingested 3, 7 and 4,8 g/kg of the respective plants. The other plants did not cause poisoning or only slight symptoms. Allamanda cathartica caused mainly manifestations of colic and the most importante post-mortem and histopathological findings were severe oedema of all parts of the wall of the rumen and reticulum, and congestion of the mucosa of the remaining digestive tract. Nerium oleander caused severe cardiac arrhythmia and severe diarrhoea, sometimes with blood. The post-mortem findings were generalized hemorrhages and the main histological lesion was necrosis of heart fibres. Tbevetia peruviana also caused heart arrhythmia and diarrhoea. Post-mortem and histopathological findings were negative with exception of one of the bovines which had diarrhoea, in which the contents of the rumen were putrid and those of the intestine were liquid. Euphorbia pulchenima caused severe weakness. Datura arborea caused the symptoms of atropine poisoning. Rhododendron spp. caused mainly regurgitation without or with vomits, sialorrhoea, manifestations of colic, diarrhoea and instability. Post-mortem and histopathological findings in the only bovine that died, were negative. The plants of the Araceae family caused sialorrhoea and sublingual and submandibular oedema. It is concluded, that the rarity of the poisoning in cattle under natural conditions by these plants is due to its low palatability and the fact that normally these plants are not available to bovines, and yet that most of these plants have to oe ingested in large amounts to cause poisoning. An exception is Nerium oleander, whose lethal dose is low. It is practically the only ornamental plant of those tested in this study, which according to the data in the literature has caused cases of poisoning in cattle.

#376 - Experimental poisoning by Holocalyx glaziovii (Leg. Mimosoideae) in bovines

Abstract in English:

The fresh leaves of Holocalyx glaziovii Taub. ( = Holocalyx balansae Micheli), a tree of the Family Leguminosae Mimosoideae, when given by mouth to bovines, caused cyanidric poisoning. The lethal dose was around 3 g/kg. One third of the lethal dose of the fresh leaves, given twice or three times a day during several days (up to 12 days) to bovines, did not cause photosensitivity.

#377 - Experimental poisoning by the pods of Stryphnodendron coriaceum (Leg. Mimosoideae) in the goat

Abstract in English:

In order to obtain data for diagnostic purposes, this study was performed to determine the lethal dose and the clinical-pathological picture of poisoning by the pods of Stryphnodendron coriaceum in goats. The pods were collected near Teresina, Piauí, triturated, moistened and given in single oral administrations to nine goats. The dose of 30g/kg caused death of all three goats, 20g/kg of two out of three goats, and 15g/kg caused only slight symptoms in three goats. The poisoning had a subacute course. Nervous symptoms were prevalent, characterized by depression with moments of exitation. There was a tendency for the goats to stay in sternal decubitus; they had ataxia, assumed anormal positions, showed hipermetria, course roars, muscular tremors and from diminished to complete lack of central and peripheral reflexes. Additionaly erosions and ulcers in the oral mucosa were observed, alterations of the rumen movements with loss of liquid during rumination; the feces varied in consistency from pasty to dried, were scarce, dark and covered by mucous. The animals showed dehydration, congestion of the blood vessels of the sclera, hepatic sensitivity and discrete icterus, bristled hair and alopecia in the dorsal region, lack of appetite and progressive loss of weight, besides broncopneumonia. Biochemical analyses of the blood revealed increase in the levels of urea, bilirubin and albumin. A constant post-mortem finding present in ali goats was focal broncopneumonia by aspiration. There were also in some goats erosions and ulcers of the nostrils, lips, gums, dental pulvinus, tongue, esophagus and rumen, and the erosions and ulcers of the upper digestive tract. Histopathological examination revealed besides the aspiration broncopneumonia only circulatory and regressive changes in liver and kidney, of discrete to moderate intensity.

#378 - Factors which influence the toxicity of Baccharis coridifolia (Compositae): an experimental study in rabbits

Abstract in English:

Experimental studies were performed on Baccharis coridifolia D.C. (Compositae), a small shrub with the popular name "mio-mio", one of the more important poisonous plants of southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, in arder to find out possible variations in toxicity due to its origin, sex, plant parts and annual variability. Doses which varied from 0.085 to 5.44 g/kg of the dried powdered aerial parts of B. coridifolia were administered in aqueous suspension by stomach tube to 49 adult rabbits. The plant material was collected in five different localities, from four sites in Brazil and one in Uruguay, in the flowering/seeding stage and separated by sex; in some regions collections were made in two successive years. From three of the sites additionally only the leaves of female plants were used for the experiments. Sixteen animals died and one that showed severe symptoms was euthanized together with the contral animal. Nineteen animals that showed slight to severe symptoms, recovered. First symptoms after the administration of the plant were seen, in the fatal cases from 6h32min to 1 day 6h15min, and in the non-fatal cases from 4h03min to 24h00min, after ingestion. The clinical course, in the fatal cases, varied from approximately 6h00min to 4 days 20h23min and, in the non-fatal cases, from 9h25min to 11 days 3h45min. The length of time from first administration of the plant till death varied from 14h20min to 5 clays 2h55min. The lethal dose varied from 0.17 to 5.44 g/kg. The main symptoms were anorexia, modifications in the form, size and consistency of the faeces and hair loss. The main post-mortem alterations were found in the stomach, caecum and liver. There was red colouration of the stomach mucosa. ln the caecum the surface of the mucosa was rough and red and the wall was oedematous. The liver was clearer than normal with perceptible lobulation. Histopathologically these lesions correspond to 1) coagulative necrosis associated with haemorrhages and oedema of the stomach mucosa, 2) haemorrhagic necrosis of the mucosa and oedema and/or haemorrhages of the submucosa of the caecum and 3) cloudy swelling and/or vacuolization of the liver. Greater toxicity of B. coridifolia was associated with more southerly sites of collection in Brazil. The female plant was up to 32 times more poisonous than the male plant; the whole aerial pa1ts of the plant were up to 16 times more poisonous when compared with only the leaves. There was up to a fourfold variation in toxicity from year to year. These differences can be explained by variations in the type and the amount of macrocyclic trichothecenes accumulated in the different parts of the plant, which are believed to be absorbed from the soil fungus Myrothecium verrucaria which produces them. B. coridifolia was compared with B. megapotamica var. weirii, which does not show these variations.

#379 - Experimental poisoning by Rhododendron ledifolium (Ericaceae) in sheep

Abstract in English:

The fresh leaves of Rhododendron ledifolium G. Don were given orally to 11 sheep, in single doses from 2.5 to 15 g/kg. The five animals that received 15g/kg, died. Doses between 6.6 and 10g/kg caused moderate to severe clinical signs, 5g/kg slight symptoms and 2.5g/kg did not cause any symptoms of poisoning. The first clinical signs were seen between 2h05min and 4h, and death occurred between 10h57min and 172h40min after the beginning of the administration of the plant. The course of the poisoning varied from 6h57min to 169h. The clinical signs occurred as short seizures, which progressively grew more frequent and more severe. The animals showed the following symptoms in sequence of their appearance: Progressive restlessness, regurgitation, initially without and !ater with expulsion of ruminal contents through the mouth, pronounced ataxia with falis to the ground, dyspnoea with variations in rhythm, intensity and frequency of the respiratory movements, with periods of apnoea, heart alterations such as arrhythmia, short periods in which the heartbeats varied in frequency, duplication of sounds, extra-sounds or missing sounds, depression, somnolence, manifestations of colic, generalized muscular tremors and dilatation of the pupils. Finally the animals had bouts of severe dispnoea with prolonged apnoea, respiratory arrhythmia, severe heart alterations, muscular weakness, difficulties in moving and to attain or maintain standing position, sternal decubitus, each time longer, lateral decubitus, and in those animals that survived longer, flacid paralysis and finally death. Post-mortem findings consisted only of hemorrhages in some organs and aspiration broncopneumonia in some animals. Significant histopathological findings were seen only in the central nervous system and were mainly swelling of the astrocytes in the grey matter of the spinal cord. In these areas a few necrotic neurons and axonal spheroids were seen. Additionally in one animal central cromatolysis was observed in neurons of the lateral groups of the nuclei of the spinal cord and medulla, besides proliferation and oedema of astrocytes in the cerebrum. The clinical signs seen in the sheep which received non-lethal doses are similar to those produced by colinomimetic drugs and by acetylandromedol; the animals which received lethal doses of R. ledifolium, showed additionally clinical signs of adrenogenic origin.

#380 - Experimental poisoning in horses by Baccharis coridifolia (Compositae) eqüinos

Abstract in English:

The fresh flowering and seeding Baccharis coridifolia DC, a herbaceous plant known as miomio, was collected in Santa Maria County, State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and fed to 5 horses. Doses from 0.125 to 0.5 g/kg caused lethal poisoning with 12 to 26 hours course, 0.06 g/kg caused severe disease with recuperation in 9 days and 0.03 g/kg only slight symptoms for a few hours. The dinical manífestations were mainly due to digestive disturbances. They were anorexia, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever, dehydration, polydipsia, tachycardia, tachyphigmia, tachypnoea, dyspnoea, restlesness, locomotor instability and death. The main post-mortem findings were distension by large amounts of liquid of the distal third of the jejunum, caecum and large colon, oedema of the wall and congestion of the mucosa of the glandular portion of the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, caecum and large colon. ln the caecum and colon major the mucosa was covered by fibrin; as well there were petechiae in the caecum and large colon. The main histological lesions consisted of necrosis of the mucosa and oedema of the submucosa, in the caecum and large colon, and to a lesser degreee of the stomach.
